Youth mental health context in Greece (2016)
This article presents the youth mental health context in Greece in the 2010s. Greece lacks appropriate policies for child and adolescent mental health. Moreover, services do not form part of an overall system, since the collaboration between ministries, state organizations, and NGOs is inadequate. Austerity policies led to a significant decrease of state funding for mental health and deterioration in the quality of services provided. Whereas, at the same time, economic hardship and examination-based educational system have as a result more stress and anxiety among adolescents. Therefore, the demand of mental health services is increasing. In this context, schools must take a leading role for the implementation of preventative strategies aimed at promoting mental wellbeing and resilience among youngsters.
